Alexandrite was originally discovered in Russia in 1834 in Ural Mountains, but manufacturing mining stopped in 1913. Since then, Russian Alexandrite has been considered to be rare and extremely valuable. The color-changing chrysoberyl (aka alexandrite) is now sourced from other countries such as Brazil, India, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. They are more common in the current market. However, Russian alexandrites have different colors, are considered to be superior in quality, and due to the very limited availability demand much higher prices.
